'Ghajini' Songs Review - Hit or Sh!t?

Review By:  Radhika Jit

Music by: A.R. Rahman

Lyrics: Prasoon Joshi

Singers: Suzanne D'Mello, Karthik, Javed Ali, Sonu Niigaam, Benny Dayal, Pravin Mani and Shreya Ghoshal

The expectations behind Aamir Khan's 'Ghajini' are immense!  First of all Aamir Khan is a huge name in itself and then you add in ace music man A.R. Rahman and the expectations hit the roof!  In fact, many are claiming it's the biggest soundtrack of the year.  After hearing the first snippets of 'Guzarish' which was the first trailer released, my curiosity peaked and I knew if the song was a precursor to the rest of the album, it would no doubt be a winner.  So did it live up to my expectations?  Read on to find out!

'Guzarish': The teaser track hit the airwaves not too long ago and it's already creating waves.  The track is brilliant and there's not doubt it will be playing in my iPod way beyond the films release.  Everything in the track melds beautifully, from Javed Ali's vocals to Rahman's music and Prasoon Joshi's touching lyrics.  One listen and you'll be hooked.

'Aye Bachchu': The track is quite different from the romantic 'Guzarish.'  Suzanne D'Mello belts out the rock tinged party song.  It has an undeniable toe-tapping rhythm with a western beat.  It's quite easy to tell this is a Rahman track with hints of his past numbers from 'Chak De! India' and 'Hindustani.'

'Kaise Mujhe': The haunting track's musical composition is impeccable, the beat, the beautiful sitar, slow build up, touching lyrics and Shreya Ghoshal's vocals work magically.  One complaint however is, I can't help but think how the track would've sounded had it been sung by Sonu Nigam, or Shaan as opposed to Benny Dayal.  It may not have 'hit' written all over it at first listen, but it will resonate with audiences after the release for sure.

'Bekha':  From the first note you know you're in for something different.  The track isn't something you'd typically hear in a Bollywood soundtrack, with bits of the piano and the unexpected use of the saxophone.  You can't help but be reminded by 'Main Aisa Kyun Hoon' from 'Lakshya.'  It should be interesting to see how it's pictured, as this is the track that will feature Aamir in 6 different looks.  Karthik's vocals are perfectly suited for 'Bekha.'

'Latto':  One of the best upbeat tracks off the album.  Shreya Ghoshal shows off her versatility with this one, as does Rahman, as it's the only track on the soundtrack that doesn't scream Rahman from first listen.  The fun carefree track will have you bobbing your head.

Verdict:  The soundtrack to 'Ghajini' has chartbuster written all over it! The winning combo of Aamir and Rahman does not disappoint!  There's no doubt we'll be hearing the songs well into 2009.

My picks:  'Guzarish,' 'Bekha' and 'Latto'
