Review by: Radhika Jit
It's the biggest film of the year and not without reason... the award winning combo of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi" live up to its hype? I decided to find out for myself.
'Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai': The track has a pure Indian feel complete with sitars and with Roop Kumar Rathod on vocals it's reminiscent of 'Veer-Zaara'. It definitely stays true to Aditya Chopra's love of romantic ballads. It's a decent track that can become immensely popular based on how it's portrayed on screen. But I can't help but think it would sound so much better with someone like Sonu Nigam or Shaan behind the mic. The album also features a much slower paced female version with Shreya Ghosal, which is a sad version obviously meant to be a situational track.
'Haule Halie': Is set in a middle class setting with Shahrukh Khan dancing around in average Joe clothes. The track features vocals by Sukhwinder Singh and has a sort of innocence about it. The break with the harmonium and violin is beautiful. It is a very well composed track, making it a nice listen and one of the best on the album.
'Dance Pe Chance': With vocals by Sunidhi Chauhan and Labh Janjua this thumping number's lyrics sound like Shahrukh Khan must be going through some kind of dance classes. It's obviously meant to be the youthful track which tries to capture the ears of the college crowd, but honestly it's kind of disappointing. While it's listenable, there's nothing in the track that we haven't already heard before.
'Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte': The most talked about track on the film which will be picturized on Shahrukh, Kajol, Rani Mukherji, Priyanka Chopra and Preity Zinta in guest appearances. It's an experimental song which is pretty risky as it incorporates lyrics and melodies from yesteryear hits like, 'Oh Haseena Zulfon Waali,' 'Jai Jai Shiv Shankar,' 'Hum Hai Rahi Pyaar Ke,' 'Jab Pyaar Kisi Se Hota Hai,' and 'Pal Bhar Ke Liye Koyi.' It's as if you're at a Sonu Nigam concert with him performing a bunch of non-stop old skool tracks. It's surprisingly a bit of a let down. Unlike the 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' updated mix, this track feels as though it's trying to do too much at once. But having said that, it has the possibility of gaining popularity simply based on how it's portrayed on screen with SRK and the ladies.
There's no doubt the soundtrack will have an enormous start at the cash registers purely based on the hype and expectations behind the SRK and Aditya combo. And while it can best be described as average, the soundtrack has the potential to become massive, based on the success of the film. It's a decent listen worth picking up.
Star Rating: 3 out 5
