Desi Artists at the White House

With the world embracing all things Desi right now, the United States’ White House didn’t want to miss out!  As the year soon comes to an end we think about the creative ones that have been recognized by the White House this year; actor Kal Penn, Dj Rekha and a cappella groups Penn Masala. Find out more about these Desi peeps who have taken over the White House this year.

Kal Penn

The U.S. was buzzing when Kal Penn announced that he was leaving the popular American TV show "House" for the "White House."  The actor, who has ditched his stage name and now goes by Kalpen Modi, has joined the Office of Public Liaison, and focuses on connecting President Barack Obama with the Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities, as well as various art groups. Kal was a big supporter of Obama during his campaign and he made Desis proud as he became one of the first Indian faces to break into Hollywood. And the actor turned White House staff member continues to do so by serving his community.

DJ Rekha

There is no denying that DJ Rekha has gained respect beyond the musical community. Time after time we hear about the DJ getting recognized by various social groups. Rekha’s story was even featured on CNN,  establishing her reputation as an iconic DJ in our community.  Well since the whole world is buzzing about her, of course the White House didn’t forget to invite her to its Diwali festivities. The DJ attended the event and said, "I never thought in my lifetime I personally witness  an African-American US President, light the White House diya for Diwali and explain the meaning of the day so eloquently."

Penn Masala

This South Asian college a cappella group has gained celebrity status as the boys have toured all over the world and performed at major events such as the 2002 Star Screen Awards in Mumbai. Penn Masala has been creating a buzz since they were founded in 1996 and the White House asked them to perform during their Diwali festivities. These talented ivy- leaguers made Desi’s proud at the White House.

Which Desi do you think has made a mark on the White House this year? Drop us a line.
