Hyderabad meets Hyphy in Haji Springer’s new fobulicious single “Hello Buddy†– included in his album by the same name. With big Bay names such as San Quinn and Keak da Sneak, the single features the raspy rap of Keak over the thickly-accented riff “Hello Buddy!â€
Haji Springer plays on the gross fobbiness of the phrase “Hello Buddy†and stereotypes often appended to Indians, referring to himself as the “Indian 7/11 rapper, buddy!†and “Hello, I’m your taxi driver, buddy!†We’re all anxiously awaiting the music video, and highly suggest that it promote desi awareness by featuring “ghost ride the rickshaw.†Other singles in the album are “Do My Thang†and “The Indian Rapper.â€
The album is true to hyphy style – fast, breathy, rough, and crass – but each has a hint of desiness (whether it’s the “BUDDY†in the background or the beat of a tabla behind electronic riffs). Thizz Entertainment has clearly struck gold with their Indian rapper – he wears stunna shades and grillz but speaks to his GenXDesi audience with lyrics like “I eat curry and drive in a hurry….see me in a taxi in your hood.†Want to comment on this article?
