DH! Exclusive: In Bed with Jay Sean!

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to spend some time in bed with British pop sensation Jay Sean? Well now you can as DH! caught up with the singer as he was about to hit the sack Wednesday afternoon, jet lagged from his recent trip to South Africa! We talked about his new single "2012" featuring Nicki Minaj, his relationship with his devoted fans and his Bollywood dreams with Priyanka Chopra.

Jay Sean took the world by storm when he dropped his hit single "Down" last year and now he's back with a new track featuring none other than Nicki Minaj, one of the hottest rappers on the scene. "2012 (It Aint The End)" hit iTunes Tuesday and is already #3 on iTunes' pop chart. So what makes Jay's new album Freeze Time different from the last one, All or Nothing? Who would he like to collaborate with next? And what are his Bollywood plans with Priyanka Chopra? Find out in DH!'s exclusive interview!

DH!: You just got back from a trip to South Africa, how was it?
Jay Sean: It was crazy. I was blown away by their reception. I had never been before and we landed and they had police come into the plane and we were like 'what is going on?' They emptied the plane and came for me and I was like 'what is happening?' They escorted us through the airport, there were 30 of them. They had a convoy of cars, maybe three at the front and three behind us and then the five of us in a Mercedes. It was amazing, crazy. They took us to the hotel. It was the warmest reception and craziest experience. I didn't expect it. The Mayor [of Durban] met me at the airport and I did the show and they told me it was the largest crowd they had ever had, 6000. It was over capacity, I was like 'wow this is crazy.'

DH!: What were the fans like?
Jay Sean: They were awesome, so happy to finally have me there and they have been fans since day one and they have a huge Indian community in Durban; the biggest population of Indians outside India and they have been following me since day one.

DH!: We have seen behind-the-scenes footage of you working in the studio, tell us a bit about what you wanted to do on this album and how it's different from your debut U.S. album?
Jay Sean: Honestly, I believe the other albums were set up albums; great albums for my life then as an artist, but one thing I've realized having spent so much time in the U.S. is that sometimes an artist's album comes at the right moment and I feel like now everything is in line for that. It's the first album signed directly through Cash Money, the first time I use the power that is Cash Money. My voice has matured so much. This is going to be a great moment in career.

I've never claimed to be an R&B artist. I grew up on R&B. I know what it is. I’m not that artist. When you listen to this album, you will understand what kind of artist I am.

DH!: Are there any particular tracks you like?
Jay Sean: I'm proud of "Break Your Back" because it pushed me out of my comfort zone in my writing. I always wanted to write a song like that, but I never had the time. This style and swagger is different. Then there's "Patience" which I think is beautiful and the sentiment is honest; I'm proud of it. I'm attached to all of them, I'm so proud of the album.

DH!: Usher made some comments about you a few months back saying "There's a very fine line between what's R&B and pop these days. Just because it's sung by a male minority doesn't mean you're urban or R&B. Those artists are pop. The true value of R&B has been brought down." Do you consider yourself to be an R&B artist and if so how does your new album prove Usher wrong?
Jay Sean: I've never claimed to be an R&B artist. I grew up on R&B. I know what it is. I'm not that artist. I've always said I'm a pop/R&B artist, I listen to people like Maxwell and D'Angelo; they are real R&B artists. What I'm doing is not that style. I'm taking those influences and sounds and I try to bring that to people; fusing it. "2012" is not R&B it's pop, but "Break Your Back" is an urban, club record and there are others that are more R&B. So this album has diversity on it, showcasing me as a singer and songwriter and lover of music. When you listen to this album, you will understand what kind of artist I am.

I love Bollywood. Priyanka and I are good friends, we talk about this all the time. I wanna work with her, maybe some songs, maybe for a film, I'm definitely interested in that world.

DH!: You have worked with Mary J. Blige, Lil Wayne, Sean Paul and Nicki Minaj, just to name a few; who's left to collaborate with? Which artist is at the top of your wish list right now?
Jay Sean: Rihanna, Jay-Z, Beyonce and Eminem; these four are just my ultimate collaboration desires. I've been lucky to collaborate with a lot of artists and the reason you do collaborations is not for the sake of it. Mary J. Blige is the queen of R&B and soul, Sean Paul is the king of Dancehall. Lil Wayne, the greatest rapper on earth, Nicki [Minaj] the greatest female emcee on the scene; it's for a reason. It's because I'm a fan of them and I want that collaboration to mean something. Rihanna to me is one of the biggest pop stars in the world. She can skip from hip-hop to pop to dance like I can so that would be an awesome collaboration. Eminem; I'm just a fan, Jay-Z as well and Beyonce is the biggest contemporary pop soul voice of our time right now.

DH!: You have built a presence in the States, are you planning on dominating the Indian market anytime soon?
Jay Sean: The thing is you really have to go there and spend some time; Upen Patel from London went there and lived there in order to go into modeling and Bollywood. Hard Kaur lives there now, the same way I live in America; in order to stay current in the market. I would have to take some time off to do the ground work. I love Bollywood. Priyanka [Chopra] and I are good friends, we talk about this all the time. I wanna work with her, maybe some songs, maybe for a film, I'm definitely interested in that world.

I still can't believe that fans go to the extent of knowing where I am. They'll find me somewhere and come bearing gifts.

DH!: We know you worked with Nicole Scherzinger in Miami, when will we hear the track? Is it on your new album?
Jay Sean: We didn't get the chance to write anything. We were trying to figure out a date but our schedules were too hectic.

DH!: Last year your single "Down" hit the top spot on the U.S. charts and ever since you have been traveling the world and touring one city after the other; which fans would you say are the craziest ones? What is the craziest thing a fan has done? Jay Sean: Craziest thing, I mean they do tons of madness. I still can't believe that fans go to the extent of knowing where I am. They'll find me somewhere and come bearing gifts, which I think is sweet. They find imported things from London, I like Nandos. They put so much thought into it; they know what my favorite shoes are. I find that so generous for a fan to do that for me. They show me pictures of their room with posters all over; from duvets to pillows, that's mind blowing! I've got so much love for them because they care for me like that.

DH!: You use Twitter a lot, do you think it makes a difference for an artist to be able to connect with fans on a personal level?
Jay Sean: Completely. I'd rather enjoy that side of Twitter. To let them know me as a person and when I have a thought that lifted my day I'm like 'maybe someone else will like this, let me tweet about it.'

DH!: Do you have a message for DesiHits.com's readers?
Jay Sean: Honestly, the reason I'm still able to do this is because of my fans. If they didn't care I wouldn't be able to so thank you for allowing me to live my dream.

DH!: Okay, we're gonna let you go to bed now. Sweet dreams!
