LA based Urban Desi band Goldspot recently released their latest album "And The Elephant Is Dancing." Desi Hits! sat down with the group’s frontman Siddhartha to talk about his musical inspirations and future projects.
Desi Hits!: So your latest album ,"And The Elephant is Dancing," is out! Tell us a little bit about Goldspot and how you came together.
Siddhartha: I grew up here in the States listening to Indian music; some of the most influential music to me, all the singers from the 60s that I still think have the most beautiful songs in the world. Since I was 7 or 8, that music had a lasting impression on me. In high school and after college, I decided to pursue my career in music, and that Indian music from the 60s never left me. I also listen to REM, The Cure, The Beatles. So it came natural to me to write music, we’re an Indie band, not an Indian band, an Indie band. That’s the mix that makes us different. The band revolves around me, I started the band 10 years ago with a buddy of mine. It’s just nice to have friends who believe in this project. The band evolves from record to record but my producer Jeff Peters is consistent.
Desi Hits!: How did you create a buzz in India?
Siddhartha: My last album just kinda put us on the map, it was released on Sony in India, it kinda spread, we already had a good following when the album was released in India, our videos were played on MTV and VH1. It’s such a great experience to have been touring in India and play at festivals.
Desi Hits!: Where is your largest fan base?
Siddhartha: I would say in the U.S., U.K. and India, the three places where we have had releases. In the U.S. we get a lot of love from local radio stations in LA and NPR, in the U.K. obviously we had the top 20 single a couple of years ago. In India we have passionate fans who do covers of our songs and put them on YouTube. We have different crowds in different places.
Desi Hits!: Who will this latest album resonate with?
Siddhartha: For me it’s a very special record, it’s been brewing in my mind for the past 20 yeras, it is the perfect blend of 1960s film sound with my Beatles influence. It will resonate with all kinds of people. Indians will think it sounds like retro Bollywood. If you know that sound you will think this album is like an Indie rock band, it will get people from Indie and pop to the older generation. This record more than the last record will have more universal appeal.
Desi Hits!: Who would you like to collaborate with?
Siddhartha: Hmm, that’s a good question. My hero today is Bjork and Radiohead, people like that but you don’t see a lot of collaborations in that music, but that would be a dream.
Desi Hits!: So the album is out, what’s next?
Siddhartha: I just finished the soundtrack for a film called "Today’s Special," which stars Aasif Mandvi from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart .They approached me about the soundtrack. It will release next year. Now we’re going on tour on the East coast to play the record for our fans. That’s it for the time being. I’m also working on some more film stuff. I’m looking forward to go on tour in India and the U.K. next year.
Desi Hits!: Do you have message for our readers?
Siddhartha: Thanks to all of our fans in India, the U.K. , the U.S., we are fortunate to make the records we wanna make. We are getting so much support for the music so thank you for helping me making that possible.
