Starring: Ajay Devgan, Tusshar Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Amrita Arora, Celina Jaitley, Arshad Warsi, Shreyas Talpade, Anjana Sukhani
Director: Rohit Shetty
Music: Pritam
Plot: Gopal (Ajay Devgan), who lives with his wife Ekta (Kareena Kapoor), sister, Esha (Amrita Arora), and a dumb brother-in-law, Lucky (Tusshar Kapoor), gets stuck in a yacht one night after he saves an attractive young woman named Meera (Celina Jaitley), from dreaded goons, while on his way back home from office. Due to the circumstances, both of them stay back on the yacht. When he arrives home the next day, his overly suspicious wife, Ekta, an extreme saas-bahu serials fan, suspects him of flirting around with his girl staff members. Gopal thinks that it's difficult to convince Ekta by telling her the truth about the incident that actually took place the prior night. Hence, he invents a story about spending the night with a fictitious friend named Anthony Gonsalves. Ekta does not believe his story, as she knows that he never had a friend by that name. So, she decides to write to Anthony to come and visit her. Gopal, then, convinces one of his juniors, Laxman (Shreyas Talpade), to pretend like Anthony to convince Ekta that he was indeed telling the truth. Laxman agrees to do so, and everything goes according to plan until the address on which Ekta had written a letter to Anthony turns out to be real! What happens next brings full on mayhem and madness, which results in confusion for the film's characters, as well as viewers!
What Works: Director, Rohit Shetty, has tried hard to make this return for 'Golmaal' successful, and he has succeeded...to an an extent...with good performances in general by all of the actors. Though, 'Golmal Returns' belongs to Tusshar Kapoor and Shreyas Talpade. Tusshar is yet again a real scene stealer, while Shreyas and Arshad Warsi display their comical side with charm. Kareena does fair justice to her role and gives an average performance, whilst Ajay Devgan is brilliant as usual! The film is bright and eye catching, and has a whole heap of well known actors, who compliment the characters designated to them.
What Doesn't Work: This time around, the negatives outweigh the positives, and 'Golmaal' unfortunately does not live up to the hype that was created around it. Although there is huge star cast, with the likes of Ajay Devgan and Kareena Kapoor, actors like Tushaar Kapoor, Arshad Warsi and Sheryas Talpade steal the show! Sometimes you can see that the jokes are too far-fetched and seem too slapstick...literally breaking the stick! Celina Jaitley, Anjana Sukhani, and Amrita Arora do not use their full potential as actresses, so was there really any need for them to be in the film?
Music: The music of 'Golmaal Returns' grows on the viewer over time, and songs like 'Tu Saala' and the title song, 'Golmaa Returns' are real gems! As are songs like 'Tha Karke', but the whopping budget that was supposedly used for 'Tha Karke' seems to have been wasted, as it creates no real charm on the big screen. Overall, 'Golmaal Returns' has an average album sountrack.
Verdict: This movie was never meant to make you think or use your brain power, but the attitude is! No-brainer comedies have worked in the past, and 'Golmaal Returns' does too! 'Golmaal Returns' has tried hard to capture elements of the first 'Golmaal', but has not completely succeeded. Although it's an okay film, it's no way better than or as good as the first one! They say 'too many cooks spoil the broth', and this is exactly the case with this film's leading role actors. 'Golmaal Returns' was overly hyped, which lead to high audience expectations, and unfortunately, even higher levels of disappointment! All in all, go check out the film at theaters near you and let us know your comments as to whether 'Gomaal Returns' wins your hearts, or puts it to sleep!
