Indian Cricket Team Wins First Test Series vs. New Zealand in 41 Years

The streak is over!  The Indian National Cricket Team defeated the New Zealand National Cricket Team by a score of 1-0 at the Reserve Basin in Wellington, clinching their first Test Series victory against New Zealand for the first time since 1968.

Rain put a bit of a damper on the event, stopping the third set of the series in a draw while also not being able to finish the second set while leading there.  The final result will wind up being a 3-1 Test Series victory.  Although the third ranked Indian team was favored to win over the eighth ranked New Zealand team, the victory is still a sweet one for Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who said the mood in the dressing room after the long awaited win was "fantastic".

"We have achieved something that is big, but the tough part is to maintain it," he said afterward.  "I think it will be tougher for the next guys who come here."

With cricket superstars such as Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, the Indian Cricket Team had superior experience over the young New Zealand team as well as an excellent balance of batting and bowling.  While the New England team is disappointed in the result, New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori said India deserved to be bracketed with Australia and South Africa at the peak of world cricket.

"They're obviously starting to prove themselves away from home," he said.  "I think you can throw Australia, South Africa and India in there as the three best teams in the world, it's hard to distinguish between the three at the moment.  We've been inconsistent but we've only lost one Test match. I think people have to remember that," he said.

There's a common phrase that states, "To the victor go the spoils."  The Indian Cricket Team is getting rewarded, alright.  According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday, each member will be handsomely rewarded.  The Board President of the BCCI Mr. Shashank Manohar, has announced a bonus of Rs.15 lakhs to every player who participated in the Test and One-Day series while, the Support-Staff will receive a bonus of Rs.10 lakhs each. Well, they should be rewarded for all of their work.  Ending a 41 year drought for a country should in result in more than just handshakes, pats on the back, and "Job well done" compliments.

Although a league like the IPL will not be in India, at least the Indian cricket fans can welcome home their cricketers as we hope they get a hero's salute whenever they come back home.  Well done.

So what do you guys think of India finally ending their 41 year drought vs. New Zealand?  Did you expect it to happen?  Does the Indian Cricket Team have a bit more respect in your book now?  Drop us a comment below.
