Former American Idol contestant Jared Cotter met R&B sensation Jay Sean when he was hosting Fuse TV's The Sauce. The two music enthusiasts have been inseparable ever since, writing hit tracks like "Down" together. Check out our interview with Jay Sean's songwriter and boy Jared Cotter:
Desi Hits: In 2007, you were on American Idol and it was your moment to shine; tell me about your life since.
Jared: It was such a crazy chance to be on American Idol, right after I got voted off, the world stopped. But luckily I got a call from Fuse TV to host The Sauce. I never thought about hosting before, but the opportunity was there and I took it. I did that for a few years and that’s how I met the incredible Jay Sean. We started to write and I've been writing ever since, it’s been great.
Desi Hits: You mentioned Jay Sean, how did you guys meet?
Jared: I had known his manger Jeremy for a while and he called me up and said 'listen I got a kid coming over from the U.K. who'se coming over to America.' So we got in the studio and wrote "Stuck in the Middle" and we just got writing from there, we wrote six songs on his U.K. album. Jay is like my brother, I love him to death and it’s truly rare to have such a friendship with someone you work with. When he got his deal over here it was truly amazing. Our dreams came true. It’s been great.
Desi Hits: You are one of the closest people to Jay, tell us something about him that his fans don’t know?
Jared: He’s hilarious, such a funny guy, he’ll always keep you laughing. He’s also extremely humble, he's a regular guy who likes to hang out with his friends and have a good time. Sometimes it's hard for an artist, but he's really touchable. People can relate to him.
Desi Hits: You co-wrote "Down," what was your inspiration for the track?

Jared: We thought the album was done but they needed one more track, so we flew down to Miami and were just brainstorming. We were watching the news and Jay said how horrible everything is in the world. I had this line in my phone: 'I love you, even if the sky is falling down' and when I said that it just clicked. Jay just said 'down down down down down!' It was written and recorded in less than two hours and two months later it was on the radio. It’s a good song but you never realize how massive something is gonna be. You never realize what a hit it's gonna be, that it's gonna make history.
Desi Hits: Do you think that songwriters get enough credit for their work?
Jared: Yeah I think so, it's starting to happen, we’re getting more noticed but the thing with Jay is, I never felt like it wasn’t my song too, I never felt like I wasn’t part of it and I thank Jay for it.
Desi Hits: What does the future hold for you?
Jared: Because I'm on "Stuck in the Middle," I'm hoping to take that and do my artist thing again. Being on American Idol, I got a glimpse of what it's like and it’s a great feeling. Over the next year I'm gonna work towards a record deal. My goal is to be an artist right now. I love writing and everyting that goes into it.
Desi Hits: Do you have a message for your fans?
Jared: Thank you for the continuing support for me and Jay Sean. Go get "All Or Nothing," hope you enjoy it.
