Movie Review: My Name is Khan

The Story:
"My Name is Khan" tells the story of Rizvan Khan, played by Shahrukh Khan, a Muslim boy who suffers from Asperger’s syndrome and who grows up to be man who believes that there are two types of people in this world; the good who do good deeds and the bad who do bad deeds. After the death of his mother, Rizvan follows his brother to the United States where he meets and falls in love with a Hindi woman, Mandira, played by Kajol. Despite his brother’s objection, Rizvan marries Mandira and loves her boy Sameer as if he were his own. After the terrorist attacks on 9/11, attitudes toward Muslims change for the worse, even in the usually open-minded San Francisco.

The Cast:
Shahrukh Khan as Rizvan Khan
Kajol as Mandira
Yuvaan Makaar as Sameer
Jimmy Shergill as Rizvan’s brother

The Crew:

What Worked:
"My Name is Khan" manages to be emotional, moving and very funny at the same time. Kajol’s and Shahrukh’s on-screen chemistry is beyond words and SRK’s performance as a man with autism is unbelievable. It is very easy to see how these two characters can fall in love with each other despite their differences and the film makes a good case for inter-religious tolerance and love across borders.

What Didn't:
The audience is only captivated for the first half of the movie. After intermission, Rizvan Khan goes on a journey, a very long journey, too long for many, and his whole stint in Georgia could have been cut out without taking anything from the movie’s quality or characters. Unrealistic scenes are mixed with over-emotional ones and the film loses some of its original intensity and humor.

The Soundtrack:
Most of Shahrukh Khan's films have been known for giving chartbusting numbers, but don't expect this soundtrack to come out with any dance tunes. Director Karan Johar has said that "My Name is Khan" will have background music but no songs to dance to. The tracks however give a powerful message on life and love. The music was composed by musical trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.

Slated or Rated:
Do not miss "My Name is Khan." It’s one of the best movies to come out of Bollywood this year. Shahrukh Khan’s performance is amazing and his on-screen chemistry with Kajol is absolutely fantastic.
