Movie Review: Veer

The Story:

"Veer"  is a period piece set in 1880 with Salman Khan as a warrior with the same name. Jackie Shroff stars alongside Khan as Raja of Madhavgarh.

Veer is a Pindari solider whose mission is to fight the British and prevent them from taking over India. His challenge is greater than this as he not only battles the British, but also his own people.  Veer's enemy, King Raja of Madavgarh, is a cunning man ready to fight Veer at any expense.

The story gets complicated as love is added to the mix. Veer loves Princess Yashodhara, played by Zarine Khan, who is the daughter of Raja. Veer is now left to decide between his love, the need to regain his father's lost honor, and his land.

This movie is an epic saga of treachery and love, of drama and bravery.

The Cast:

Salman Khan as Veer
Mithun Charkoborty as Prithvi Singh
Jackie Shroff as Raja of Madhavgarh

Zarine Khan as Princess Yashodhara

Story: Salman Khan

What Worked:

With a film full of battles and a need for crafty cinematography, "Veer" met the mark. The action scenes and cinematography in this film were on par. The costumes and sets are quite elaborate and help make the film more realistic and relevant to the time period. Mithun Chakoborthy plays Salman Khan's father and does a fantastic job. He evokes great emotion in each viewer and deserves a round of applause.

What Didn't:

Despite the star-studded cast, great cinematography, and impressive sets and costumes, the actual meat of "Veer" is lacking. The story is quite weak and at times we were unsure of who or what Veer's enemy - the King or the British Empire. "Veer" has been compared to Hollywood hits like "Gladiator" and "Braveheart" and while there were definite resemblances in certain scenes, this film is not as impressive. Lastly, Sohail Khan is annoying!  Sohail plays Veer's brother and just makes obnoxious noises and has little acting talent. Newcomer Zarine has a far ways to go as she too lacks acting talent and expression.

Soundtrack:

Sajid-Wajid deliver an average soundtrack. There could have been more moving and energetic compositions to compliment this epic saga. The eight tracks are quite repetitive and boring.

Slated or Rated:

This movie will not be called a classic. However, if you are a Salman Khan fan you will enjoy his role in "Veer." The movie is also worth watching for the few battle scenes, sets, and costumes.

Rating:

2/5 Stars
