Music Review: 'The Rebirth' by iQ

iQ immigrated to the United States at a young age. Not necessarily trying to fit in and assimilate to the American lifestyle, iQ kept in touch with his Indian roots. His music speaks volumes of how he feels about life.

What We Think:
iQ impressed with his album "The Rebirth." The release is another east meets west vibe, but it stands apart from others on the scene with its fresh lyrics and variety of featured vocalists. The album packs in 15 songs, all with different vibes, sounds and stories.

The song "Chalo" features Punjabi rapper Bohemia and has a powerful beat and message. The lyrics talk about the east and the west. iQ's English lyrics and Bohemia's Punjabi beat illustrate this style quite well. "Maa" is another powerful number. It tells the story of a struggling mother and is dedicated to iQ's own mom. iQ's strong vocals are juxtaposed with Manasee Vyas' sweet and soft voice.

A few songs on the album have traces of our favorite Bollywood songs. "Chura Liya" reminds us of "Yeh Ishq Hai" from the movie "Jab We Met," while iQ's "India Girl" adopts "Tum Se Hi," also from "Jab We Met." iQ keeps it fresh by borrowing the melodies of classics like "Maula Mere," "Boli Si Surat," and "Mera Jhoota Hai Japani," but adding his own lyrics and featured vocalists to each song.

Worst song
"Oh My God"

"Oh My God" borrows the beat of the song, "Maula Mere" from the movie "Anwar." With "Maula Mere" being such a moving and flawless song, we were shocked to hear this track get a makeover. It's not the song choice that bothers us; it is iQ's added lyrics. The song repeats "Oh My God" time and time again like some girls gossiping on the street about the boy next door. The original has a moving message and the silly lyrics ruin the credibility of the song, making it the album's worst track.

Final Verdict
iQ has really made a strong debut album and we are impressed! His east meets west vibes and song choices are quite good. He does not disrespect and ruin any familiar melodies and keeps it original. The album is available on the BestofBoth Music label. You should check it out if you are looking for a moving album with some great beats.
